Let’s look at each test you need to complete to obtain the Class 2 Medical certification from DGCA.
Eye Test: This includes a color vision assessment to check if partial or full-color blindness exists, which could disqualify a candidate from becoming a Pilot. Additionally, a distant vision test ensures optimal visual acuity of 6/6. It also evaluates depth perception and peripheral vision, crucial for safe flying in all conditions.
Radiology: This involves four X-rays of the chest and sinuses. The purpose of a chest X-ray is to rule out any infections or anomalies related to the structure or function of your lungs. Sinus X-rays are useful in diagnosing sinusitis and other sinus diseases that may impair a pilot’s capacity to equalize pressure during flight, potentially resulting in barotrauma.
Ear Test: A Pure Tone Audiogram is administered to check the candidate’s hearing ability across the frequency range. Checked in this exam verifies the candidate’s aural health and ability to detect the full range of required sounds. It also checks for any signs of hearing loss or partial deafness that could affect communication with air traffic control or hearing critical warnings during flight.
ECG (Electrocardiogram): They monitor the heart’s activity while doing this test to look for any signs of underlying cardiac conditions or anomalies in the rhythm of the heartbeat. It helps identify potential risks of cardiac events during flight, such as arrhythmias or heart attacks. Additionally, it can detect signs of blocked arteries or other cardiovascular issues that could compromise the Pilot’s health and safety. We recommend not drinking any Caffeinated drinks at least 6 hours before this test.
ENT (Ear, Nose, and Throat) Examination: This examination ensures that the candidate’s ears, nose, and throat are functioning normally. It checks for any signs of infection, inflammation, or structural abnormalities that could interfere with breathing, equalizing pressure during flight, or cause discomfort or pain during ascent or descent.
Blood Test: Blood samples are drawn to examine various parameters, including Total Count/Differential Count (TC/DC) to detect signs of infection or inflammation, Haemoglobin level to ensure adequate oxygen-carrying capacity, and Blood Group and Rh Factor (ABO and Rh). Tests for liver and renal function, lipid profiles, blood sugar levels, and other metabolic problems that could significantly impair a pilot’s performance during flight may also be included.
Urine Test: This Examination check ensures normal levels of sugar and protein in the urine, which can indicate underlying health conditions such as diabetes or kidney disease.
Note: In case your BMI is not in the normal range, usually above the normal range you will be required to get additional tests done. We recommend trying to keep your BMI within the normal range to ensure you have no issues.
